Ortler region - Alpine emotions
He dwarfs the surrounding mountains, towering glacier-clad and supreme.
At 3,905 metres (12,812 ft) ‘King’ Ortler is South Tyrol’s tallest mountain and the highest summit in the entire Eastern Alps. Not surprisingly the entire holiday region bears ‘his’ name. His majestic, awe-inspiring presence is magnetic, attracting climbers and mountain hikers from all over the world.
The Stilfser Joch (Stelvio) National Park lies at his feet, one of Europe’s largest and most interesting protected areas situated in the heart of the Central Alps and covering an area of around 135,000 hectares. It comprises the whole of the Ortler-Cevedale massif and its side valleys, bordering on to the Engadin Swiss National Park in the north and the Adamello Nature Reserve in Lombardy in the south.
It encompasses every type of natural and man-made Alpine feature, from the rugged peaks, glaciers, Alpine meadows and farms, extensive forests in the lower parts down to pastoral hamlets and villages.
The Ortler region is paradise on earth for nature lovers.
